CWD is proud to announce the successful outcome of the High Court claim against PPB Entertainment Ltd (trading as Paddy Power and Betfair) brought by our client Corrinne Durber, after a 5 year dispute involving a jackpot win of £1,097,132.71.
On 18th October 2020, Corrinne placed a bet on Paddy Power’s online game Wild Hatter. The game featured two components: a fruit machine and a wheel of fortune. During gameplay, Durber’s screen lit up, displaying that she had won the Monster Jackpot worth £1,097,132.71. However, Paddy Power only paid £20,265.14 into her account, claiming it to be the ‘Daily Jackpot’.
Durber contacted Paddy Power to query the situation and was told that the computer system had suffered a display error. Unsatisfied with the explanation, Corrinne sued PPB Entertainment Ltd for breach of contract and sought payment of the remaining winnings plus interest and legal costs Corrinne succeeded on all fronts!
On 5th March 2025, Mr Justice Ritchie ruled in Corrinne’s favour in the High Court, ordering PPB Entertainment Ltd to pay her the full ‘Monster Jackpot’ winnings. The judge gave several reasons for his decision:
- Paddy Power’s’ Game Rules’ governed the gaming contract, not the RNG ‘random number generator’ that was used to display the outcome.
- The Game Rules took precedence over all other Terms & Conditions and the Game Rules clearly indicated that Corrinne had won the ‘Monster Jackpot’.
- In any event the Terms & Conditions relied upon by Paddy Power were not enforceable under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 as they were too broad and insufficiently notified to customers given their significance to gameplay.
As result of the decision Corrinne is delighted to be £1,000,000 + richer!
For CWD this is a second landmark victory against an online bookmaker, having represented Andy Green in his £1.7 million High Court victory against Betfred in 2020. Bookies must learn that they cannot hide behind hugely significant ‘get out’ clauses which are hidden in pages and pages of small-print!
